We are always interested in talking "GOAT" and to teach and learn
from everyone. We are located in upper east Tennessee a few miles east of Rogersville, just off HWY 11W. Our small farm is made up of 23 acres of pasture and woods. Plenty of room to expand with more goats and more hobbies. (The lofty picture was taken during a long drought. Not much green grass.) |

Before we got our first goats we built a barn that was specifically
designed for them. We studied the books for required square footage
and all the general requirements then started laying our our barn.
This barn includes four sections that are divided by wood walls with gates and access to individual fenced fields. A central hay feeder is used for the two main sections with two smaller hay racks in the other two sections. Each section also has a large sleeping area and grain and mineral feeders. The storage area for a few bales of hay, the feed and general supplies is separate with an outside access door. This area also allows observation of the goats without entering their area for visitors that just want to look and not touch. Our next steps are to add windows for added ventilation and water and electricity. If we are real ambitious we will add a camera system and offer access to it on the web. |

Cajus is our registered Sable Shepard. His favorite activity is to
watch the goats from outside the fence. He would like to play with
them but his excessive energy is a bit much for the goats to handle.
He settles for running around the fence and letting them know who is
boss around the farm. Cajus came to us a few years ago as a pup from a breeder here in East Tennessee. His father was a champion in guard dog competition but his friendly nature was better for the family and farm. |

When it comes to animals around the house the cats have got it made.
There are eight all together. Clockwise from top left: Biscuit,
Blue, Dot, Katy, Sassy, Yoda, Milo and Bubba.
The oldest two are Blue and Dot. Four more came from an abandoned litter that we bottle fed to keep them alive. The other two younger ones we added when they needed a home. Recently we installed a cat door so they could come and go as they please. This has been an excellent idea except for the few times that they drag in a mouse or bird to play with. Once they learn the routine for feeding, sleeping and where not to be (like on the kitchen sink) they do just great. They even add a little sport for the dog to chase. |

Another one of our hobbies to to grow a variety of gourds. We started a
few years ago with "luffa" gourds (like the luffa sponge) and have expanded
to many different types including small ones that are 2 inches tall to big ones
that are over 40 inches around.
The big ones are grown on the ground with the garden stuff but the rest are grown on trellis that make it easier for weeding and watering. Trellis grown long neck gourds come out nice and straight. The gourds are dried and cleaned and are sold primarily on eBay but we save a few for our own crafting. |

We thought it would be a better picture to show the inside of a bee hive than
the outside. Most people do not get the chance (or even want) to look at the
inside of a hive. Raising honey bees has been one of the more interesting experiences. We have watched the documentaries on TV but really did not expect the challenge that it has been. There was a lot more to learn than just setting up a hive and letting the bees do their thing. After reading many books and working with local bee keepers we think we have it under control. |
| Every year we lose a hive or two to the mites or wax moths or the bees swarm and make the hive too weak to survive. We continue to replace them and try and control the loss. The nice result is we get some fantastic tasting honey. |
